Best Magnesium Supplements for ADHD

Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is a common condition affecting many children worldwide. Parents often seek natural ways to support their child's health and manage ADHD symptoms. Magnesium, an essential mineral, has garnered attention for its potential benefits in improving attention, reducing hyperactivity, and promoting better sleep in children with ADHD. At Pinnacle Chiropractic, we understand the importance of exploring all options to support your child's well-being. This article will guide you through the best magnesium options for children with ADHD and address common questions about magnesium supplementation.

The Role of Magnesium in ADHD

Magnesium plays a crucial role in numerous bodily functions, including nerve and muscle function, protein synthesis, and energy production. Research suggests that magnesium deficiency may be linked to ADHD symptoms such as irritability, lack of concentration, and sleep disturbances. Supplementing with magnesium can help address these deficiencies and improve overall well-being.

Best Magnesium for ADHD Child Dosage

When considering magnesium for children with ADHD, it's essential to choose the right form and dosage. The recommended daily allowance (RDA) of magnesium varies by age:

  • 1-3 years: 80 mg/day
  • 4-8 years: 130 mg/day
  • 9-13 years: 240 mg/day

For children with ADHD, it is crucial to consult with a healthcare provider before starting any supplement to determine the appropriate dosage and form. Generally, magnesium citrate and magnesium glycinate are well-absorbed forms suitable for children.

Magnesium for Children: Types and Benefits

  1. Magnesium Citrate:
    • This form is highly absorbable and gentle on the stomach. This form is helpful for constipation and other digestive issues.
  2. Magnesium Glycinate:
    • Known for its excellent absorption and minimal laxative effect, magnesium glycinate is another good option for children. It supports relaxation and may help reduce hyperactivity and improve focus. It is commonly recommended for children with ADHD due to its effectiveness in calming the nervous system and improving sleep
  1. Magnesium Chloride:
    • Available in liquid or topical forms, magnesium chloride can be applied directly to the skin or taken orally. It is well-tolerated and beneficial for children with digestive sensitivities.
  2. Magnesium Oxide:
    • While not as absorbable as other forms, magnesium oxide is often used for its affordability. It can be effective for children with constipation, a common issue in ADHD.

Children's Magnesium Supplement: Safety and Efficacy

Is Magnesium Safe for Kids? Yes, magnesium is generally safe for children when taken within the recommended dosages. However, excessive magnesium intake can cause side effects such as diarrhea, nausea, and abdominal cramping. Always consult with a healthcare provider to ensure the correct dosage and to monitor for any adverse effects.

Can Kids Take Magnesium? Absolutely. Magnesium supplements can be a valuable addition to a child's diet, especially if they have a deficiency or conditions like ADHD. Ensuring your child gets the right amount of magnesium can support their overall health and improve specific symptoms.

Magnesium for Kids' Sleep

One of the significant benefits of magnesium is its ability to promote better sleep. Magnesium helps regulate neurotransmitters and melatonin, the hormone responsible for sleep. For children with ADHD, better sleep can lead to improved focus, reduced irritability, and overall better behavior during the day.

Choosing the Best Magnesium Supplement for Kids

When selecting a magnesium supplement for your child, consider the following:

  1. Form and Flavor:
    • Children's magnesium supplements come in various forms, including chewable tablets, gummies, powders, and liquids. Choose a form and flavor that your child will readily accept.
  2. Dosage and Purity:
    • Look for supplements that provide an appropriate dosage for your child's age. Ensure the product is free from unnecessary additives, artificial colors, and sweeteners.
  3. Reputable Brands:
    • Choose products from reputable brands known for their quality and safety standards. Check for third-party testing to ensure purity and potency.

Patient Stories: Discover Reviews by Satisfied Chiropractic Patients

Hear what our patients have to say about their experience at Pinnacle.

After Dr. JJ worked on him just one time, he has been able to enjoy laying on his back more.
Dr JJ and the team did an incredible job with my baby boy. After he worked on him just one time, he has been able to enjoy laying on his back more, whereas before he would just HATE being on his back. My baby boy has reached a new level of ease! With less pressure to the nervous system. Even answering so many questions as a first time dad and giving advice for healthy development! Can’t wait to see how more he develops under care. Thank you to the Pinnacle team you are amazing!
I’ve now become a patient of theirs too, and I hope to start my other two children there as well
My 10 month old has been delayed on her gross motor skills. At her 6 month checkup, her pediatrician recommended she get evaluated for PT. In her case, I felt like she needed more that just PT to get caught up. I’ve heard so many people speak highly of chiropractic care for kids, I thought we’d give it a try. I can’t remember how I came across Pinnacle (might have been on Instagram because they have a lot of helpful posts). But anyway, I called and setup the first couple appointments for intake and scans. The entire staff is super friendly. Dr. Matt listened very well to what was going on with my daughter and we came up with 3 goals for her to hopefully meet with 9 weeks of adjustments (2x/week). The afternoon after her 2nd adjustment, she literally reached 2 of her goals. I almost couldn’t believe it. I realize it could have just been a coincidence but it’s just too close to happening right after the adjustments for me to assume that. She’s had about 10 adjustments total now, and she is catching up on other gross motor skills. Because she is a baby, her adjustments are quite gentle. There’s no cracking or popping involved. I’ve now become a patient of theirs too, and I hope to start my other two children there as well!
